His Majesty's Embassy present their compliments to the Imperial Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and have the honour to refer to their Note Verbale No. 95 of the Zad May, regarding interference with Hongkong junks by armed Japanese

vessels.

It is now reported that trading Junk No. T 1754 H, while on its way to Hongkong with foodstuffs, was hailed by Japanese warship No. 17 at about 5 p.m. on the 27th March last, while off Tai Chan Customs station and summoned to stop. warship opened fire with machine guns, the trading vessel anchored, and was then towed over to the warship by a motor boat from the latter vessel. The junk was detained by the warship for three days, during which time her cargo was removed. The cargo consisted of 150 piouls of rattan string, valued at H.K. 450,00 800 piauls of rattan mata valued at 6000.00, 500 piouls of preserved vegetables valued at $ 7500, 500 piculs seaweed valued at $ 8000.00, 50 jars of preserved turnips valued at 500.00, and 18 picula of ginger valued at $ 180,00, giving a total value of H.K. 17,570.00. The junk was released on the 30th

March.

His Majesty's Embassy have the honour to request that this incident may be investigated by the Japanese authorities concerned with a view to preventing further interference with supplies destined for the colony of Hongkong.
